Frequently Asked Questions

What's a furoshiki?

Furoshiki is a traditional Japanese wrapping cloth used for wrapping gifts, carrying items, and eco-friendly packaging. It’s versatile, reusable, and comes in various sizes and patterns, making it both functional and beautiful. Read more about the History of the Furoshiki.

What does “furoshiki” mean in Japanese?

In Japanese, “furoshiki” (風呂敷) combines “furo” (bath) and “shiki” (spread or cloth). Historically, these cloths were used to wrap belongings in bathhouses to keep them dry. Over time, furoshiki evolved into versatile wraps used for gift-giving, carrying items, and eco-friendly packaging.

What is a furoshiki for?

A furoshiki is a traditional Japanese square piece of fabric designed for wrapping and carrying items. Originally used to wrap and transport clothes to and from the bath house, today, its uses are nearly limitless, including:

  • Gift Wrapping: Eco-friendly and elegant, furoshiki wraps elevate any gift.
  • Carrying Items: Transform it into a reusable bag for groceries, lunch, or everyday essentials.
  • Home Decor: Use it as a tablecloth, wall hanging, or decorative covering.
  • Fashion Accessory: Style it as a scarf, headband, or handbag.
  • Travel Companion: Keep it handy for wrapping souvenirs, organizing luggage, or creating an impromptu picnic mat.

Furoshiki embodies sustainability and creativity, offering a functional and beautiful alternative to disposable packaging.

How do you wrap a gift with furoshiki?

Furoshiki wrapping is simple! Lay the cloth flat, place the item diagonally, fold the opposite corners over the item, and tie the remaining corners on top. Check out our guide on “How to Tie a Furoshiki” for step-by-step instructions.

Can you use any cloth for furoshiki wrapping?

While any cloth can be used in a similar wrapping style, traditional furoshiki are often square, soft, and slightly stretchy, making them easier to tie and secure. Keiko Furoshiki wraps are designed with these qualities in mind, using durable, stain-resistant materials that create beautiful folds and knots.

What sizes does Keiko Furoshiki offer?

Keiko Furoshiki cloths come in 25x25 inches, ideal for small to medium gifts. This size is perfect for wrapping books, bottles, lunch boxes, and various other items, and provides a secure, elegant wrapping solution.

Can you wear furoshiki?

Absolutely! Furoshiki is incredibly versatile and can be styled as an accessory. You can fold and tie it into a chic scarf, wrap it as a headband, or transform it into a fashionable tote bag. Some even use larger furoshiki to create unique shawls or cover-ups. With a little creativity, furoshiki can become a stylish addition to your wardrobe.

Who keeps the furoshiki when giving a gift?

Traditionally, the recipient may keep the furoshiki as part of the gift. However, it’s also acceptable to politely ask for the furoshiki back, especially if it’s a meaningful or expensive wrap. Many people appreciate this sustainable practice, as it encourages reuse.

Do I need to return the furoshiki wrap after receiving a gift?

It depends! Some people gift the furoshiki as part of the present, while others may ask to have it returned. If you’re unsure, it’s always okay to ask the giver if they’d like it back. When gifting with Keiko Furoshiki, consider sharing the wrap’s story—it makes it even more memorable, whether it’s kept or returned.
