All About ToteBar: A Modern Take on the Japanese Patchin

At Keiko Furoshiki, we’ve always believed that everyday objects can be both beautiful and functional. That’s what drew us to furoshiki in the first place—the traditional Japanese cloth used for wrapping, carrying, and gifting.

With the launch of ToteBar, we’re building on that same philosophy.

ToteBar is our modern interpretation of the patchin, a simple wooden handle used in Japan to transform fabric into a carry bag. Much like furoshiki itself, the patchin is rooted in practicality, adaptability, and thoughtful design. We loved the idea immediately—but wanted to create a version that felt distinctly our own.

From Idea to Object

Like many of our products, ToteBar started with a simple question:

How can we make furoshiki even more useful in everyday life?

Andrea envisioned a handle that would make it easier to carry a furoshiki as a bag—something intuitive, elegant, and versatile enough for daily use. From there, Tyler took the lead on prototyping and manufacturing, refining the shape, strength, and functionality to ensure it felt comfortable in the hand and secure when in use.

Every curve, connection point, and detail was carefully considered. Once the form was finalized, Andrea designed the packaging and overall experience, making sure ToteBar feels just as thoughtful to give as it is to use.

What began as an idea is now one of the simplest ways to expand how you use a furoshiki.

Thoughtful Materials, Intentional Design

ToteBar is made from upcycled walnut and beechwood, chosen for their durability, natural beauty, and sustainability. Each piece is smooth, lightweight, and designed to withstand everyday use while aging gracefully over time.

Built-in magnets allow the handle to snap closed securely, making it easy to attach and remove while keeping your items safely in place.

One of our favorite details is subtle but meaningful: the cut-outs are shaped like our signature leaf motif. It’s a small design element that ties ToteBar back to the natural inspiration behind many of our furoshiki prints.

More Ways to Use What You Already Own

At its core, ToteBar is about versatility.

With a single addition, your furoshiki can transform from a wrapping cloth into a tote bag, market bag, or travel companion. It adds structure without sacrificing flexibility, and function without adding waste.

It also makes gifting even more special—what starts as wrapping becomes part of the gift itself, ready to be reused again and again.

A Natural Extension of Furoshiki

Furoshiki has always been more than just gift wrap—it’s a system of carrying, wrapping, and living with intention. ToteBar simply extends that system, offering another way to integrate it into your daily routine.

Simple. Functional. Beautiful.

Just how we believe everyday objects should be.
