Introducing the ToteBar: A Modern Twist on a Traditional Japanese Accessory
At Keiko Furoshiki, we believe that tradition and innovation can go hand in hand—literally. That’s why we’re thrilled to introduce the ToteBar, a new product designed to turn any square piece of fabric, like a furoshiki, into a functional, stylish, and eco-friendly tote bag. Beautifully crafted from upcycled wood and engraved with our Keiko Furoshiki logo, the ToteBar is more than just a tool—it’s an invitation to reimagine how we carry what matters.

Why We Created the ToteBar
We started Keiko Furoshiki to introduce more people to the beauty, function, and sustainability of Japanese fabric wrapping. It's such a versatile cloth that furoshiki can be so much more than gift wrap. I can be tied around lunchboxes, covering bread baskets, used as scarves or decor, and yes, tied into bags.
In Japan, there are a few accessories that make furoshiki even more versatile. Drawing inspiration from these, we’re proud to share our answer: the ToteBar.
What Is the ToteBar?
The ToteBar is our modern take on the patchin—a traditional Japanese wooden handle used to turn furoshiki into a purse or tote. It’s made from upcycled wood and finished by hand. Each bar is cut and drilled with care, featuring our iconic petal-shaped openings that hold your fabric securely and comfortably in your hands. When used together, the pair of handles grip the tied corners of your furoshiki and create a durable, balanced carrying handle.

Think of it as a portable, zero-waste bag system: you bring the cloth, the ToteBar turns it into something you can carry with confidence.
Designed with Purpose
We didn’t just want the ToteBar to be practical—we wanted it to be beautiful, too. That’s why we created two elegant options to start:
-
Matte Black: Sleek and modern, this option blends beautifully with bold, graphic furoshiki designs.
-
Natural Walnut: Warm and earthy, this version pairs perfectly with our floral and botanical prints.
Both styles are engraved with the Keiko Furoshiki logo using a subtle press technique that won’t chip or flake, even with repeated use. The surface is smooth to the touch, and the entire piece is sealed to resist light moisture and wear.
Sustainability That Travels with You
The ToteBar reflects our deep commitment to eco-conscious design. By using upcycled wood, we minimize waste and give new life to beautiful materials. By encouraging reusable, multi-purpose products, we help our customers reduce reliance on plastic and disposable bags.
And unlike traditional totes or purses, the ToteBar isn’t bulky. It packs flat in your bag, backpack, or glove box. Pair it with a folded furoshiki, and you’ve got a stylish, reusable bag system that’s always ready when you are.
Who Is It For?
We designed the ToteBar for:
-
Eco-minded shoppers who want to reduce plastic waste
-
Travelers who love compact, lightweight solutions
-
Makers and creatives who love DIY and versatility
-
Fans of Japanese culture and traditional design
-
Gift-givers who want to present something unique and reusable
Whether you're bringing a bottle of wine to a party, carrying lunch to work, or picking up produce at the farmers market, the ToteBar gives your furoshiki a new purpose.
How to Use It
It’s easier than you think:
-
Lay your furoshiki flat and place your items in the center.
-
Tie the opposite corners into two tight knots.
-
Thread each knot through the cutouts in the ToteBar pieces.
-
Lift and go!
You can wear it with long handles or short handles for a roomier bag.

We’re just getting started. The ToteBar is the first in a line of furoshiki accessories we’re exploring to help you get the most from your wraps. Whether you're new to furoshiki or have a growing collection, this tool adds a whole new layer of creativity.
